Resolution drives file size more than anything else
Halving the resolution quarters the pixel count, and file size falls accordingly. Going from 4K to 1080p typically removes three quarters of the weight while still looking sharp on any phone or laptop screen.
720p remains a good default for screen recordings and tutorials; 480p is enough for talking-head footage where the content is the audio.
Expect a full re-encode
Rescaling means decoding and re-encoding every frame, so this is the slowest operation on the site. A desktop handles a few minutes of footage comfortably; on a phone, keep the clips short.
