What is MOBI?

MOBI is the legacy Mobipocket ebook format that Amazon adopted for early Kindles. Amazon retired it in 2022 in favour of EPUB and KFX.

Created by Mobipocket in 2000, acquired by Amazon in 2005.

  • Works on older Kindle hardware that cannot read EPUB
  • Reflowable text with bookmarks and annotations

What is EPUB?

EPUB is the open ebook standard — essentially a zipped mini-website of HTML and CSS that reflows to fit whatever screen it is opened on.

Published by the International Digital Publishing Forum in 2007.

  • Text reflows to any screen size, with reader-controlled fonts
  • Open standard supported by nearly every reader except older Kindles
  • Supports accessibility features, semantic structure and embedded media

Why convert MOBI to EPUB?

  • EPUB is the better fit for reading long-form text comfortably on phones, tablets and e-readers, while MOBI is built for legacy Kindle libraries.
  • It sidesteps the main drawback of MOBI: officially deprecated by Amazon and no longer accepted for uploads.
  • You gain text reflows to any screen size, with reader-controlled fonts.
  • Compatibility improves where it counts: Apple Books, Google Play Books, Kobo, Calibre, Thorium and Kindle via send-to-Kindle.

Quality and file size after conversion

Both formats are lossless, so nothing is thrown away. The output is a byte-faithful representation of the input; only the container and the compression scheme change, which is why sizes differ while the content does not.

Compatibility

MOBI opens in Older Kindle devices, Calibre, Kindle Previewer. EPUB opens in Apple Books, Google Play Books, Kobo, Calibre, Thorium, Kindle via send-to-Kindle.

If the file has to work for someone else, choose the format their software already understands rather than the one with the best specification.

Limitations to know about

  • Fixed layouts, comics and heavy figures render inconsistently
  • Older Kindle hardware needs conversion first

When to keep MOBI instead

MOBI is still the right choice for legacy Kindle libraries. Keep the original alongside the converted copy whenever you might need to re-export at a different size or quality — conversion is quick, but recovering discarded detail is impossible.

Frequently asked questions

Is this MOBI to EPUB converter free?

Yes. Every conversion on Convert Always is free, with no account, no watermark and no daily download cap. The site is funded by advertising rather than subscriptions.

Are my MOBI files uploaded to a server?

MOBI to EPUB is one of the few pairs that needs server-side processing. The file is sent over an encrypted connection, converted, returned to you and deleted immediately — it is never stored or shared.

Will converting to EPUB reduce the quality?

Both formats are lossless, so nothing is thrown away. The output is a byte-faithful representation of the input; only the container and the compression scheme change, which is why sizes differ while the content does not.

Can I convert several MOBI files at once?

Yes. Add up to 20 files to the queue, convert them in one pass and download the results individually or bundled into a single ZIP archive.

What is the maximum MOBI file size?

Files up to 100 MB each are accepted. Browser-side conversions are limited mainly by your device's memory, so very large video files convert faster on a desktop than on a phone.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes. The converter is built mobile-first and works in Safari and Chrome on phones and tablets. Heavy media conversions are slower on mobile hardware but still run locally.
