What is PNG?

PNG is a lossless raster format built for graphics rather than photographs. Pixels come back out exactly as they went in, and an alpha channel stores per-pixel transparency.

Created in 1996 as a patent-free replacement for GIF.

What is PDF?

PDF is a fixed-layout document format. Fonts, images and positioning are embedded, so the file prints and displays identically on every device.

Created by Adobe in 1993 and an open ISO standard since 2008.

Why convert PNG to PDF?

• PDF is the better fit for final documents that must look the same for everyone, while PNG is built for screenshots, logos, icons and anything that needs transparency or razor-sharp edges.
• It sidesteps the main drawback of PNG: photographs are typically two to five times larger than the JPEG equivalent.
• You gain pixel-identical layout everywhere, including print.
• Anything transparent in the PNG file will be flattened onto a solid background, so check logos and cut-outs afterwards.
• Recipients see the exact same pagination you do, which matters for anything printed, signed or submitted.

Quality and file size after conversion

Both formats are lossless, so nothing is thrown away. The output is a byte-faithful representation of the input; only the container and the compression scheme change, which is why sizes differ while the content does not.

Limitations to know about

• Awkward to edit — the format stores placement, not document structure
• Text does not reflow, so reading on a phone often means zooming

When to keep PNG instead

PNG is still the right choice for screenshots, logos, icons and anything that needs transparency or razor-sharp edges. Keep the original alongside the converted copy whenever you might need to re-export at a different size or quality — conversion is quick, but recovering discarded detail is impossible.
