What is DOCX?

DOCX is the modern Microsoft Word document: a ZIP archive of XML parts describing text, styles, tables and images as editable structure.

Introduced with Office 2007 as the Office Open XML standard.

What is Markdown?

Markdown is plain text with a light, readable syntax for headings, lists, links and emphasis that converts cleanly into HTML.

Created by John Gruber in 2004; CommonMark standardised it in 2014.

Why convert DOCX to Markdown?

• It sidesteps the main drawback of DOCX: layout shifts between applications and font sets.

• Compatibility improves where it counts: GitHub, GitLab, Notion, Obsidian, Bear and Static site generators, documentation platforms and most note apps.

Quality and file size after conversion

Both formats are lossless, so nothing is thrown away. The output is a byte-faithful representation of the input; only the container and the compression scheme change, which is why sizes differ while the content does not.

Text, headings and lists are preserved; complex layout is simplified.

DOCX opens in Microsoft Word 2007+, Microsoft 365, Google Docs, LibreOffice Writer, Apple Pages, Most phone office apps. Markdown opens in GitHub, GitLab, Notion, Obsidian, Bear, Static site generators, documentation platforms and most note apps.

If the file has to work for someone else, choose the format their software already understands rather than the one with the best specification.

Limitations to know about

• Only the text layer is carried over: images, styling and precise positioning are dropped.
• Limited layout control — no columns, precise positioning or page breaks
• Dialects differ over tables, footnotes and task lists

When to keep DOCX instead

DOCX is still the right choice for documents still being written, reviewed or collaborated on. Keep the original alongside the converted copy whenever you might need to re-export at a different size or quality — conversion is quick, but recovering discarded detail is impossible.
