Raster graphics explained
A raster image is a rectangular array of pixels with a fixed width and height. Photographs, screenshots and scans are inherently raster because they sample a continuous scene.
Enlarging a raster image invents pixels that were never captured, which is why upscaling looks soft or blocky. Reducing size is safe and often improves apparent sharpness.
JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP and TIFF are raster formats.
