EXIF
The metadata standard cameras use to record capture settings inside images.
Convert a file nowEXIF explained
EXIF stores exposure settings, camera and lens models, timestamps, orientation flags and optionally GPS coordinates.
The orientation flag matters in conversion: an encoder that ignores it produces a sideways image, which is the usual cause of rotated photos after a batch convert.
PNG has no EXIF block, so JPEG to PNG conversion normally discards it entirely.
