Alpha channel explained

A standard colour pixel stores red, green and blue. An alpha channel adds a fourth value from fully transparent to fully opaque, usually with 256 levels, enabling soft edges and drop shadows that blend with whatever is behind them.

PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF (1-bit only), TIFF and SVG carry transparency. JPEG does not, which is why exporting a transparent logo to JPG produces a solid background.

When a conversion must drop the alpha channel, the transparent pixels are composited onto a chosen matte colour — white by default in most tools.
